SKOWHEGAN — Police Saturday handed out more than 70 tickets for improper parking during the 30th annual 10-Mile Lawn Sale.

Lawn sales were held on many streets, including Malbons Mills and Dr. Mann roads, and stretched into Cornville via Route 150 and West Ridge Road.

Police Officer Jason Gayne said motorists parked on sides of roads marked “No Parking,” and some drivers even parked nearly in the middle of roads.

Gayne, who has worked the lawn sale detail the last few years, responded Saturday to at least one vehicle accident, but there were no injuries. He also had to escort an ambulance to Cedar Ridge Center, a nursing home on Dr. Mann Road.

“They were having a hard time. Vehicles wouldn’t move out of the way for them,” Gayne said.

Thousands of people from all over Maine and beyond flocked to the area for the lawn sales, buying up furniture, clothes, dishes, toys, lawnmowers, cars and all sorts of household items.

Amanda Sandford, 28, said she sold items from her Dr. Mann Road lawn starting around 6 a.m. and closed up shop about 1:30 p.m.

She said it was a successful day.

“We probably sold 50 to 75 percent of what we put out — books, seedlings, clothes, bathroom fixtures, miscellaneous houseware things,” Sandford said.

One woman came all the way from Canada for the lawn sale, said Sandford, who has taken part in the sale the last four or five years. Another customer hailed from Auburn, she said.

“I think that this year wasn’t as good in terms of the number of people,” Sandford said. “The stream of people wasn’t as heavy as it was in past years. I don’t know if that’s because it’s more spread out now and we’re on the Dr. Mann Road, or if it’s just that people are straying away from it.”

Somerset County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeremy Leal reported no problems in Cornville other than traffic congestion. He did not issue any tickets.

“This year, it actually went very, very well,” Leal said.

The sale continues Sunday, but Leal said Saturday is the biggest day.
