SKOWHEGAN — Longtime Skowhegan Selectman Donald Lowe has resigned his seat on the five-member Board of Selectmen.

Board Chairwoman Betty Austin read Lowe’s letter of resignation, effective April 2, during Tuesday night’s regular meeting of the board.

Lowe said in the letter that his wife is having health problems and he wants to devote more of his time to being with her. He thanked the people of Skowhegan who supported him over his 34 years as a police officer, firefighter and selectman.

He said it was an honor to serve the town.

Lowe, 68, a semi-retired builder, was re-elected to the board in 2012. He has served 10 years as selectman and worked as a police reserve officer in Skowhegan for 23 years and for the Fire Department for 12 years.

Austin said the board will not appoint anyone to finish the one year left on Lowe’s term, but will place the vacant seat on the ballot for elections at the June 10 Town Meeting. Nomination papers will be available Wednesday and are due by April 28, according to Austin. The term of office will be for one year because Lowe’s full term expires in June 2015.
