SOLON — A Starks man was taken to the hospital Monday afternoon after a snowmobile collision with a station wagon on U.S. Route 201, according to police.

Peter Rines, 43, was crossing the highway on a trail in Solon when his snowmobile, a 1997 Polaris Indy 700, was struck by a station wagon driven by Nancy Whittemore, 59, of Solon, according to Chief Deputy Dale Lancaster of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

Rines was in fair condition Monday afternoon, according to a nursing supervisor at Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan.

The accident was reported at 12:08 p.m. and remains under investigation. Police think a mechanical problem in the snowmobile may have been a factor in the crash, according to Lancaster.

The snowmobile was destroyed and the station wagon, a 2010 Chevrolet HHR, was damaged significantly, he said. Whittemore and a passenger in the station wagon were wearing seat belts and were uninjured, Lancaster said.

The Solon Fire Department also responded to the accident.
