SKOWHEGAN — Police are investigating a series of ten car burglaries centered on the Bigelow Hill Road area Wednesday morning.

None of the cars were damaged, and the stolen items included a laptop, a woman’s purse and a radio, said Skowhegan Police Chief Ted Blais.

The most commonly reported loss, however, was loose change, and most of the cars also were unlocked, he said.

There are no suspects.

Blais said is was unusual that many of the cars were burglarized in driveways near homes and that so many victims were nearby during the break-ins.

Eight of the ten burglaries were reported on Bigelow Hill Road, which is a rural road on the southwest side of town near the Fairfield town line.

The other two burglaries occurred on South Factory Street and North Avenue, but police believe the burglaries are all related, he said.

The burglaries were reported between 7:46 a.m. and 2:46 p.m. and are believed to have taken place between late Tuesday night and sunrise Wednesday, said Blais.

Even though the area where most of the burglaries took place is remote, Blais said, residents should remember to lock their doors.

“It is very frustrating for us and we hate seeing this happen, but people need to remember to lock their cars and bring their valuables inside or at least hide them,” he said.

Police asked anyone with information to call the Somerset County Communications Dispatch Center at 474-6885 or 474-6386.
