Piscataqua River bridge now open for shipping traffic

The Sarah M. Long Bridge over the Piscataqua River was raised Saturday evening, allowing ships to head upriver for the first time since the drawbridge span got stuck on Wednesday

Transportation officials said the bridge, which was opened at 6:40 p.m. Saturday, will remain open for shipping until 2 p.m. Sunday, when they will attempt to lower the span, make repairs and then close it completely to allow vehicles to pass over Monday morning.

Ships, including those carrying heating oil, have been held up since the lift span on the 73-year-old bridge got stuck during a routine test Wednesday morning.

The bridge crosses the Piscataqua between Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery.
