HOPE -- Three people were killed in a crash late Monday night when the pickup they were traveling in slammed into a tree on Barnestown Road.

The dead include a student at Rockland District High School, an eight-grade student from South Thomaston and a 21-year-old Hope man.

The pickup they were traveling in lost control on Barnestown Road, overturned and slid into a tree, according to a statement from the Maine State Police.

Katie Kelly, 17, of Rockland, and Misti Leach, 14, of South Thomaston, were killed instantly, according to police. Daniel Dodge II, 21, died at the accident scene after rescue workers freed him from the wreckage using the Jaws of Life.

The crash was reported to police at 10:45 p.m., and police this morning notified school officials of the fatal crash.

Investigators continue to look into what caused the crash.

In addition to the Maine State Police, the Knox County Sheriff's Office, the Camden and Rockland police departments and several Emergency Medical Services and fire personnel from area towns responded to the accident.
