Time Warner behind Lego League contest

Morning Sentinel Staff

AUGUSTA — This weekend’s 12th annual Maine First Lego League Championship will be sponsored by Time Warner Cable, event organizers said Tuesday.

Maine Robotics is holding the event, which is 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Augusta Civic Center.

Time Warner’s sponsorship grant, which also includes a scholarship fund for rookie robotics teams, was made as part of the company’s Connect a Million Minds initiative to address the nation’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math.

The annual Lego championship is the largest science and engineering education event in Maine, according to a news release. This year’s event will feature 66 teams of children ages 9 to 14, who have been practicing, building and researching their robots in preparation for the championship.

Time Warner Cable’s sponsorship will underwrite costs of the championship. The rookie grant was used to buy registration fees, robot kits and playing fields for 15 teams around the state. Teams from North Anson, South Paris, Scarborough, Bangor, Mars Hill, Kittery, Hermon, Old Town, Kennebunk, Pittsfield, South Berwick, Rockland and Winslow all received support from the Time Warner Cable grant.

Other First Lego League supporters this year include Fairchild Semiconductor, the University of Maine College of Engineering in Orono and the Maine School for Science and Mathematics in Limestone.
