New Gloucester toll plaza to get high-speed lanes

NEW GLOUCESTER — It will soon be possible to drive through the New Gloucester toll plaza on the Maine Turnpike without slowing down.

The turnpike authority is starting a $5 million project to replace the middle lanes of the plaza with what is called open-road tolling. That allows drivers with EZ Pass transponders to drive through at up to 65 mph.

The toll plaza in Hampton, N.H., already has the system in place.

Drivers who do not have transponders will still be able to slow down and pay cash.

Turnpike Executive Director Peter Mills tells WCSH-TV the new toll system will save money.

The turnpike authority expects traffic to be going through the high speed lanes by next spring. It also plans high-speed tolls in Gardiner.

Earlier this week, the turnpike authority reduced the price of the E-ZPass transponders from $25 to $10 to promote their use.
