Waterville man dies from Palermo crash injuries, second man in serious condition

A Waterville man pinned inside a Jeep after a head-on crash with a tractor-trailer early Wednesday in Palermo died later that night at the hospital, according to Maine State Police.

Dean Camacho, 27, of Waterville, died at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Steve McCausland, spokesman for the Maine State Police, said Thursday.

Camacho was a passenger in a Jeep driven by Christian Arsenault, 23, of China, when the Jeep crossed the centerline on North Palermo Road at 5:45 a.m. Wednesday and collided with a tractor-trailer traveling in the opposite direction.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash and it was not weather-related, as Wednesday's snowfall had not started. Rescue personnel freed Camacho from the vehicle.

Arsenault, who McCausland said was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle. He was listed in serious condition Thursday night after previously having been listed in critical condition, according a hospital spokeswoman.

McCausland said the men were traveling to work, but he did not know where that was.

Camacho graduated from Waterville Senior High School in 2003 and also attended the auto body program at Mid-Maine Technical Center.
