WILTON — A Chesterville woman was killed in a car accident this afternoon when she failed to yield at a stop sign and her vehicle struck a logging truck.

Witnesses said Claire Trask, 59, drove her 2000 Jeep Cherokee north on Route 156 into the intersection with Route 4 around 1:15 p.m. when the two vehicles collided, according to Chief Heidi Wilcox, of the Wilton police, in a news release.

The logging truck, driven by Patrick Smith, 37, of Dixfield, tipped over trying to avoid the crash, Wilcox said.

The accident is under investigation by Sgt. Chad Abbott of the Wilton Police Department. State police are assisting Wilton police in reconstructing the accident. Wilcox said Wilton police want to speak with anyone who witnessed it.

Traffic was closed on Route 4 near the accident site for more than four hours while fire and rescue crews from Wilton, Farmington and East Dixfield cleaned up the scene.

The Jeep was a total loss from the damage, and the 1986 Mack truck driven by Smith was damaged substantially, Wilcox said.
