HALLOWELL — Two people were taken to the hospital Saturday after they were stabbed at a Water Street bar.

The alleged attacker was also taken to the hospital after bystanders subdued him. He was reportedly treated and released and is jailed on charges of aggravated assault.

Hallowell Police Chief Eric Nason, who had only gotten an oral report Sunday and had not yet read an incident report, said he had few details of the stabbing, including names of the victims or suspect, or the time the alleged stabbing occurred.

Nason said the two people who were apparently stabbed and taken to the hospital were not initially believed to have life-threatening injuries.

A third person, believed to have stabbed the two people, also was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released.

The alleged stabber, whom Nason said is from Colorado, was charged with aggravated assault and taken to Kennebec County jail were he was held in lieu of $50,000 cash bail. He is expected to make an initial court appearance Monday.

Nason said the stabbing occurred outside the Higher Grounds bar. He wasn’t sure what sparked the dispute. Nason said the suspect used a box cutter to stab the two people.

Nason said the suspected stabber was injured when bystanders intervened. It was unclear exactly how the alleged stabber was injured.

“They were going to make sure he wasn’t able to use that knife again,” Nason said.
