STRATFORD, Conn. — Stratford's Town Council will be taking up the mayor's proposal to name a new school after a teacher killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Mayor John Harkins wants the new elementary school named after Victoria Soto, a 27-year-old Stratford resident who died trying to shield her students from the gunman. Twenty children and six staff members were shot to death at the Newtown school.
The Town Council is scheduled to vote on the name of the school Monday night. Harkins says his plan has been met with overwhelming support and he doesn't anticipate any objections.
The mayor also is hoping to build a memorial to Soto, and a petition has been started to rename a local street after her.
Soto graduated from Stratford High School in 2003.
