WATERVILLE — A Fairfield man faces felony aggravated criminal mischief charges after he allegedly smashed a front window early Wednesday at Framemakers at 46 Main St. downtown.

Lance Huff, 37, of 58 Old Main St., Fairfield, was arrested Wednesday after a witness called police and reported he was following the culprit north on Main Street, according to Deputy Chief Charles Rumsey, of the Waterville Police Department.

Officer Robert Bouley went downtown and found Huff extremely intoxicated near the former Al Corey music shop across the street, Rumsey said Thursday.

“After being placed in handcuffs, Huff became combative, pulling away from the officer and challenging the officer to a fight and refusing to get into the cruiser,” Rumsey said.

Police subdued Huff with pepper spray and officers were then able to get him into the cruiser, he said.

He was charged with aggravated criminal mischief, a class C felony because the value of the window, which was curved glass, was $5,000, according to the shop’s owner, Rumsey said.

A class C felony is punishable by a fine of up to $5,000 and up to five years in prison, he said.

Rumsey said Huff was uncooperative and combative with police during the booking process at the police station.

He said the witness told police Huff was walking alone on Main Street before the incident and yelling as if people were there, but he was alone.

“The witness observed Huff step into the entryway of Framemakers, heard glass breaking and saw him walk away,” Rumsey said.

Huff was holding a small cooler in his hand and used it to strike other windows as he walked along the street, the witness reported.

Huff, whose bail was set at $250 cash, was taken to the Kennebec County jail in Augusta. He is scheduled to appear June 10 in Kennebec County Superior Court, according to Rumsey.
