Whitefield voters mostly take proffered paths at Town Meeting

WHITEFIELD — Town officials faced little opposition at Saturday's Town Meeting, with voters signing off on a budget that is smaller than the current year's.

Earlier in the day, residents re-elected Selectman Frank Ober and chose Anthony Marple to fill the board seat vacated by Tom Colpitt.

Town Clerk Aaron Miller said funding requests by social service organizations caused the most debate at the 2 1/2 -hour meeting held at Whitefield Elementary School. Almost 60 residents attended, according to Miller.

In the end, residents approved the amounts recommended by the Budget Committee, except for Healthy Kids and the Children's Center. Voters authorized $1,000 for those two groups, more than what the committee recommended.

Voters rejected a proposal to remove the requirement for selectmen to notify all voters by mail when they call a special town meeting.

Miller said the selectmen were trying to save the $1,100 cost of sending the notices out.

A change accepted by the voters was removing the limit on the amount of money the selectmen can move between accounts.

In the past, Miller said, selectmen could move only up to 10 percent of an account. That didn't amount to much in smaller accounts and limited the board's ability to add to an account with a deficit, Miller said.
