WHITEFIELD — The Whitefield Planning Board has scheduled a special meeting for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to discuss sand and gravel pits in the town.

The board will consider asking the Board of Selectmen to put an item on the warrant for the March 15 Town Meeting to place a six-month moratorium on the development of sand and gravel pits.

Town Clerk and administrative assistant Aaron Miller said Harry C. Crooker and Sons has received a Department of Environmental Protection permit to dig below the water line at the pit the company owns at Thayer Road and Route 218.

The moratorium would allow Whitefield officials to re-examine the town’s development ordinance, which has not been improved since it was declared constitutionally invalid in a Superior Court decision in 1994. The court ruled in favor of Crooker, which had brought the suit after Whitefield denied the company a permit for a mobile asphalt plant.
