In New Hampshire, Fish and Game officials say they have suspended the search for a missing man, citing rising waters in the Smith River in Bristol.
Officials say Aaron Hoyt, 32, of Northfield, is presumed drowned after leaping into the river Monday.
Fish and Game Lt. James Kneeland said Wednesday the river has risen 9 feet since Tuesday and is predicted to rise another 14 feet by Thursday morning.
In Vermont, Gov. Peter Shumlin said damage from the overnight flooding was wide-ranging and warned that Lake Champlain is nearing flood stage.
More than 45 roads were closed Tuesday and Wednesday. Officials say a bridge also washed out in Johnson.
The National Weather Service said Wednesday that widespread flooding will occur along the Passumpsic River in Lyndonville and St. Johnsbury Center.
The weather service says homes and businesses on U.S. Route 5 along the river between the two communities will be inundated.
Most rivers around Vermont are receding and should drop below flood stage, but overnight snow and ice made for some rough travel.
