AUGUSTA — Forestry officials have created a new website (http://www.maine.gov/agriculture/horticulture/Wreaths.htm) offering tips to Maine companies that ship Christmas trees and wreaths out-of-state.
The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry is reminding decorative-plant shippers that other states have regulations about wreath and tree shipments that could cost them money and time.
Maine state horticulturist Ann Gibbs said some states are impounding and destroying shipments of trees and wreaths to prevent the possible infestation of plant diseases.
Maine businesses each holiday season ship millions of dollars' worth of wreaths and trees out-of-state.
The department has created an informational sheet that is available on its website.
