PORTLAND — A statewide organization dedicated to helping Democratic women win elected office recently named Farmington native and Maine Attorney General Janet Mills its Woman of the Year.

Emerge Maine, in a news release, cited Mills’ accomplishments since 1980 for their selection. At the time, Mills was 32 and the first woman in New England to become a district attorney and among the first nationally to hold the office, according to her biography on the attorney general’s website.

Mills also was elected four times to the Maine House of Representatives. She was elected twice as the state’s attorney general, the only woman to hold the office.

Mills’ other accomplishments include helping to found the Maine Women’s Lobby and serving on the Margaret Chase Smith Foundation Board.

Heidi Brooks, of Lewiston, was selected as Emerge Maine’s Rising Star. She was selected for work that includes having served as secretary of the Maine Democratic Party.

The two will be honored at a celebration June 20 in Augusta. More information is available at www.emergemaine.o rg/events.
