ATHENS — School officials locked down the Athens Elementary School briefly Thursday because of a behavior problem with a student.

The other children in the school for pre-kindergarten students through grade eight were never in any danger, said School Administrative District 59 Superintendent Todd LeRoy.

“There was one child who was having a bit of a time today, and for that child’s safety and welfare, they went into a lockdown until they had that child subdued and had the child calmed down,” LeRoy said. “The lockdown was solely to help control a single student.”

LeRoy said parents were not notified of the lockdown because there was no danger to the other students. There were no weapons involved in the incident.

Citing privacy concerns, he declined to give details, including the identity, age or gender of the child.

He said the district has an emergency policy in place in the event of a more serious situation.
