FAIRFIELD — A banking executive with ties to higher education has been chosen to speak at the upcoming Kennebec Valley Community College commencement.
Lawrence Wold, the Maine market president for TD Bank, will address hundreds of students during the college’s 43rd commencement, scheduled for 10 a.m. May 18 at the Augusta Civic Center.

Wold is a member of the Foundation for Maine’s Community Colleges Leadership Council.
In 2012, Wold spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the college’s new health care simulation laboratory, which was created in part thanks to a $100,000 donation from the TD Charitable Foundation.
In addition to his banking credentials, Wold has served on a variety of economic development organizations, including the Maine State Chamber of Commerce, and is a past board member of Friends of Casco Bay, an environmental group.
Richard Hopper, who took the reins as president of the college in late April, also will speak. After his first day as president, Hopper said he planned to meet with as many of the graduating students as possible.
Other speakers include John Fitzsimmons, president of the Maine Community College System; and Kris Doody, head of the system’s board of trustees.
Tammy Jones, the student of the year, will address her fellow graduating classmates. Jones, of Oakland, earned student-of-the-year honors in April for maintaining a 3.7 grade-point average while being heavily involved in the college community.
Jones, who is president of the college chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society, will graduate with an occupational therapy assistant degree and plans to become certified and begin work in that field this summer.
The exact number of graduates is not yet determined, but 522 students are candidates for graduation this semester.
Commencement speakers at the college in recent years have included Sara Burns, president of Central Maine Power Co.; Earl Smith, chairman of the KVCC Foundation; Sen. Justin Alfond, D-Portland; and philanthropist William Alfond.
Two days before the ceremony, at 7 p.m. May 16, outstanding students will be recognized at the college’s Fairfield campus during a Evening of Excellence event, which is open to the public.
