PITTSFIELD — Sebasticook Valley Health recently announced that Dr. Robert J. Schlager has joined the organization as its chief medical officer. Schlager joined the medical staff at the Pittsfield hospital earlier this month.

Since 2007, Schlager had been the vice president of medical affairs at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Maryland. MaineGeneral receives “A” in safety, quality

MaineGeneral received an A — the top rating — from a national nonprofit group that tracks hospital safety, quality and affordability.

The Hospital Safety Score was developed by The Leapfrog Group using information from its survey of the nation’s hospitals and publicly available data on medical and medication errors, patient injuries and infections. Hospitals were awarded an A, B, C, D or F. Only 26 percent of the 2,651 U.S. hospitals rated received an A, including 14 in Maine. Among the factors used in the scoring are complication rates from surgery, infection rates, success in preventing bed sores, falls and medication mistakes, IV blood line infection rates and the coverage by specialists in critical care units.
