BURNHAM -- A masked man robbed Patterson's General Store at gunpoint Friday night and made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said Monday.

The armed robbery was reported by one of two clerks inside the Pond Road store at 6:17 p.m., according to Robert Keating, chief deputy of the Waldo County Sheriff's Office.

There were no customers inside the store at the time of the robbery, which was committed by a single male wearing a black ski mask and a green-khaki, military-style jacket, Keating said. The clerks described the man as about 5 foot, 10 inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds.

"He displayed what was described as a long-barrel rifle-type of weapon," Keating said, and left on foot.

Several police officers responded to the 911 call, including officers and investigators from the Waldo Sheriff's Office, Maine State Police, Kennebec County Sheriff's Department and Clinton and Pittsfield police departments.

A state police tracking dog was brought in, Keating said, and followed the suspect's scent on and off Winnecook Road, which Pond Road becomes after the intersection with nearby South Horseback Road.

But the trail eventually went cold.

"This is just speculation -- the matter remains under investigation -- but we believe he probably went to a waiting vehicle, because all of a sudden the track ended," Keating said.

Detective Merl Reed and Sgt. Dale Brown are leading the case's investigation, Keating said.

Police asked that anyone with information on the robbery suspect to call the Waldo Sheriff's Office at 338-6786.
