BURNHAM -- Residents accepted the 2010 budget, voted back an incumbent selectman and approved the development of a wind turbine ordinance at the annual town meeting Saturday.

About 25 people attended the two-hour meeting to approve the 2010 budget of $586,471, which is up 9 percent from 2009.

In the only contested item on the ballot, residents said yes to George Robison for selectman and no to Brent Chase, in a vote of 59 to 30.

Residents favored having the planning board develop a wind turbine ordinance to spell out restrictions on height, setbacks and noise levels, among other regulations.

Planning board chairman Brian Swift said it is important to have an ordinance, so the town doesn't have to put together "a quickie ordinance" if a resident proposes constructing a turbine.

"This is a small little town, and there are places to put wind generators," he said.

Residents approved $20,000 for a new town office roof and $150,000 for snow removal, sanding and salting. Among other items, they approved $31,000 for fire department expenses, $8,000 for general assistance and $136,170 for town road expenses, including resurfacing projects.

Residents approved cemetery committee chairman Carleton Croft's motion to double the proposed amount of money for Waldo Community Action Partners, a nonprofit that administers programs designed to reduce poverty. Residents approved $3,000 for the organization.
