FARMINGTON -- Franklin County commissioners Monday awarded the contract for the new Franklin County Dispatch Center at a price below the low bidding company's original submission, but still slightly above the project's budget.
The project was awarded unanimously to Taylor Made Homes Inc., in Wilton, for $476,231, which was $831 more than the budget.
Commissioners renegotiated the price with the owner of Taylor Made Homes, Scott Taylor, after he submitted an original bid of $498,000. Taylor is also a Wilton selectman.
The commissioners still expressed concern that the construction would go over budget.
The contract for the new dispatch center did not include the cost to have Central Maine Power route an underground power line to the center.
Project Engineer Keith Ewing said the power company has not given an estimate on the cost, but costs could total around $25,000.
The commissioners said they can get additional money as needed from the sheriff department reserve fund, which amounts to $48,000. County Clerk Julie Magoon said the commissioners also can borrow up to $50,000.
Taylor said the price was reduced from the earlier bid by planning to buy a smaller protective enclosure for the generator, saving $22,669, and by eliminating the electric heat backup system, saving $2,453.
The price includes $9,195 for the cost of paving, which the commissioners originally considered postponing and budgeting for the next fiscal year.
The new building, to be built across from the sheriff's office on County Way, is scheduled to be finished by July 9, but will be functional by April.
