Fire crews from six area fire departments responded around 5:15 p.m. to a fire that was already engulfing a home.
Charles Avery was in the process of buying the home from his brother Darryl, he said, and had planned to fix up the house and live in it with his family.
Although still in the process of restoring the home, he already spent $11,000 in renovations, he said, and paid $6,000 as a down payment.
The fire started at one end of the house where there was a shed, Solon Fire Chief Ronald Brown said to a reporter, as fire crews battled the smoky blaze.
By 6 p.m., the roof had caved in, and the structure was destroyed.
"Nothing left," Brown said.
The owners were not home at the time of the fire, Brown said.
The state fire marshal's office will investigate.
Solon, Bingham, Anson, North Anson, Madison and East Madison fire departments responded.
