AUGUSTA (AP) -- The Maine Senate has stopped short of banning all guns in Acadia National Park by allowing in guns held by people with concealed weapons permits.
The Maine Legislature has been trying to decide whether to override a new federal law that allows guns in national parks and wildlife refuges. The Maine House is next to weigh in.
The Maine bill originally would have outlawed all guns in Acadia National Park and the St. Croix Island International Historic Site. But it was later amended to apply only to Acadia.
Also, the Senate on Thursday gave initial approval to allowing concealed weapons permit holders, off-duty police and retired law enforcement officers to carry loaded weapons into the park.

As long as law-abiding citizens can obtain concealed weapons permit, they should be allowed to carry their concealed gun anywhere they feel necessary. If a person has been checked out and deemed law abiding and responsible, why restrict them from carrying concealed weapons anywhere? If criminals don’t really know who has a gun they may feel a little less free to act as they wish.

If this law passes can I bring my machine gun to Acadia? I had a permit to own one. Swards are legal. Can I wear my Katana at thunderhole? I'm not a criminal so it's ok right?

If the guns that are available today were available 'back in the day', the 'right to bear arms' may have been written differently. Our society should never have evolved where people are carrying the type of waepons the NRA insists is their 'right'.

Actually, Kool, the second amendment made sure that the personal arms of The People were a match for the personal arms of the military. So, your and others' insistence that the second amendment does not apply to the firearms the NRA "insists is their right" is not only patently false, the NRA does not insist anything of the sort. The NRA did not, and does not oppose licensing of automatic weapons and their owners. There's the "compromise" and it's been in place since the 1930's. If they did, "Mungo's" goofy question would be answered in the affirmative. Mungo, if you can find someplace on your person where you can conceal your Katana Sword or your machine gun, I guess if you're a concealed weapons permit holder and a licensed machine gun owner, you can carry it. Full auto handguns are available, but prohibitively expensive these days. Facts please. I am certain they could not envision the internet or computers either. Same argument, different issue.
