Waterville area man arrested on warrant charges of impersonating officer, extortion, burglary and theft

AUGUSTA -- City police on Saturday arrested a Waterville-area man suspected of impersonating a police officer in Windham and held him on five warrants, according to police Sgt. Christopher Shaw.

Two Augusta police officers arrested Steven Shaw, 26, no relation to Sgt. Shaw, about 3 a.m. at an apartment on Sarah Street, off Leighton Road, according to Sgt. Shaw.

The suspect is being held at the Kennebec County jail in lieu of $27,000 cash bail based on central and southern Maine warrants charging him with two counts each of burglary and theft, theft by extortion, another theft charge, violation of conditions of release and impersonating a public servant, Sgt. Shaw said.

Steven Shaw was hiding in the attic when police arrived at the Sarah Street apartment, and the officers had to talk him down before arresting him, Sgt. Shaw said.

Shaw allegedly went to a Windham residence on Nov. 21 and demanded money, claiming he was a Cumberland County sheriff's deputy and threatening to arrest the victim if he didn't get the money, Windham police said.
