A former Augusta man was arrested in the coastal town of Rockport Thursday morning with a handgun that police believe was stolen somewhere between Augusta and the midcoast region on Tuesday or Wednesday.

It was seized when Victor J. Pendleton, 21, now of Belfast, was stopped in a blue Jeep Cherokee Thursday by Rockport Police Chief Mark Kelley.

Rockport Police Officer Craig Cooley said the vehicle was stolen in Jefferson.

Pendleton had just been released from Two Bridges Regional Jail in Wiscasset on Tuesday, Cooley said.

Pendleton is now in Knox County jail, charged with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, operating after suspension, unauthorized use of property and violating conditions of release.

Cooley said police believe Pendleton might have traveled from Wiscasset through Augusta and Jefferson before reaching Rockport, which is why they think the weapon might be from that area.

Cooley asked that anyone missing a handgun call the department at 236-2027 to identify the weapon.
