WATERVILLE — A Waterville man was scheduled to make his first appearance Monday in U.S District Court in Bangor on charges of distributing the narcotic oxycodone.

The man, Maurice McCray, 31, also listed as residing in Farmington, was arrested Saturday in Waterville on a federal warrant after an undercover sting in December. He was taken to the Somerset County Jail in East Madison. An intake worker at the jail said McCray has been moved since then to another facility by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

McCray was observed selling the 24 oxycodone tablets Dec. 15, according to an affidavit filed in federal court by Duane Cloutier, a Waterville police officer who works full time as a special agent for the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.

Cloutier and DEA special agent Katherine Barnard set up the sting using a confidential informant who was wearing a hidden recording device and a transmitter, according to the affidavit.

Barnard had provided the informant with $600 in cash and was present when the informant made a phone call from a car to McCray and placed a drug order. The pair met McCray, who allegedly got into the car and displayed two dozen blue 30-milligram pills and completed the transaction.

The pills were put into a cellophane wrapper and handed over to Barnard. McCray also allegedly told the informant he had cocaine for sale at $70 per gram, according to the affidavit.

Monday’s 4 p.m. court appearance also was to include a hearing to appoint an attorney for McCray. If he is convicted, he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and $1 million in fines. He also faces a minimum of three years of supervised release, or probation upon his release, if convicted, according to court documents.

In 2006, McCray was sentenced to seven years in jail, all but three years suspended, and three years’ probation after he pleaded guilty to unlawful trafficking in OxyContin, unlawful possession of OxyContin, operating under the influence, operating after habitual-offender status, operating after revocation and criminal forfeiture.

In 2003, McCray was sentenced to eight months in jail after he pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of cocaine in Waterville.
