MERCER — A Rome man was injured Saturday when he apparently shot himself in the left foot while hunting, according to a press release from the Maine Warden Service.
Andrew Knight, 37, told officials he was hunting with his father, Kenneth Knight, as well as a female junior hunter, off Rome Road when the shooting occurred about 12:30 p.m. Kenneth Knight and the female also are from Rome, the release says.
“(Andrew) Knight stated he was returning from the woods from hunting to meet with his relatives … near the roadside,” the release says. “Knight stated he placed the gun barrel on the top of his left foot in a resting position and the firearm discharged. The gun was a Remington, pump-action 12-gauge shotgun loaded with buckshot when the firearm discharged.”
Knight was taken by Delta Ambulance to Inland Hospital in Waterville, according to the release. Game Warden Steve Allarie and Sgt. Terry Hughes responded to and are investigating the incident. State police also assisted. Knight was listed in stable condition, the release says.
