Man seriously hurt when car hit tree in New Vineyard

NEW VINEYARD -- A Kingfield man remained in serious condition Monday night after he crashed his car into a tree on Route 27 over the weekend, a sheriff's deputy said.

Glen Reynolds, 51, was initially taken by ambulance to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington after the crash Sunday at 12:18 a.m., on a remote stretch of the highway in New Vineyard, said Franklin County Sheriff's Deputy Christopher Chase.

Reynolds was then flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, where he remained Monday, Chase said.

Reynolds was driving north on Route 27 when the 2009 Toyota four-door sedan he was driving veered off the road, struck a tree and rolled over before coming to a rest on the car's roof in the middle of the road, Chase said.

Chase said Monday that he suspects alcohol contributed to the crash. He would not discuss details, saying blood samples were taken from Reynolds as part of the investigation, which is ongoing.

Reynolds was not wearing a seatbelt. He smashed through the driver's side window and was partially ejected from the car as it rolled over. Emergency responders found Reynolds conscious and lying in the road with his right shoulder and arm still inside the car, Chase said.

Reynolds suffered a serious back injury, cuts, scrapes and other injuries, Chase said.

The car had hit a tree on the side of the two-lane section of highway that is lined by woods, across the street from 1472 New Vineyard Road, Chase said.

Chase does not suspect speed or road conditions contributed to the crash, which was in a 55 mph zone. Reynolds had no prior driving convictions record and his license was valid, Chase said.

Emergency responders from the New Vineyard Fire Department and Maine State Police assisted at the scene of the crash.
