WATERVILLE, Maine (AP) — A regional business group is opposing two of the three bond issues on next month’s ballot in Maine.

The Mid Maine Chamber of Commerce says it’s opposing the $11.3 million borrowing proposal for capital improvements for the University of Maine System, community college system and Maine Maritime Academy. It’s also against the $7.2 million bond for water and sewer upgrades.

The chamber says that borrowing would place Maine further into debt at a time when Maine taxpayers are least able to bear the additional burden.

But the Waterville-based chamber group is supporting the $51 million bond issue for highways, bridges and other transportation projects, saying that maintaining the integrity of the state’s transportation system is vital to the Maine economy.
