WATERVILLE — It’s a boy.

At 12:33 a.m. Tuesday, Finnegan John Duffy became central Maine’s New Year’s baby when he was delivered at Inland Hospital to first-time parents Hannah Skoczenski and Chris Duffy of Waterville. Mother and child are well.

Skoczenski, 26, is a hairstylist at Remedy Salon and Spa; Duffy, 26, is an employee of Bolduc Technologies in Augusta and a Marine Corps veteran who was deployed to Iraq for seven months. He is also the running back coach for Messalonskee High School’s football team.

Finnegan, at 7 pounds, 6 ounces and 21 inches in length, is on his way to becoming a football player, Duffy said. The new father brought a toy football and hockey stick to the hospital room at The Birthing Center, along with football-themed onesies.

“I figure by next week, he’ll be ready to hit the field,” Duffy joked.

Skoczenski said she wasn’t anticipating a New Year’s baby. Finnegan arrived four days earlier than his due date.

When asked what her first thoughts were when Finnegan was delivered, Skoczenski responded with a laugh.

“Thank God he’s out,” she said.

There were at least two other New Year’s babies in the region. At MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Campus, parents Jordan Cater and Jacob Alward, of Waterville, welcomed a son, Jaxon Jacob Thomas Clayton Alward, at 1:14 a.m. Tuesday.

At Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, parents Courtney and Andrew Harmon, of Dixfield, welcomed a daughter, Arianna Alizabeth Harmon, at 7:17 a.m.
