NORRIDGEWOCK — The planning board decided against meeting privately Monday and instead met in open session to discuss local ordinances.

The board will eventually make a decision on an after-the-fact permit application by Madison Electric Works for a sewer system next to the Sandy River. The town’s code enforcement officer granted permit approval without putting the issue before the planning board, which didn’t learn of the sewer system until after it was installed.

The board had planned to meet in executive session, but after an objection by the Morning Sentinel and half an hour of debate, they voted to discuss the matter in open session.

According to Maine law, boards may not discuss local ordinances in private.

The board then began the public session with a representative of the Maine Department of Environmental Protection. They discussed technical aspects of mapping, resource protection land, non-conforming structures and various assigned land uses, among other topics.
