WINTHROP — U.S. Route 202 is scheduled for some rumble strips down the center line in the next construction season.

Town councilors, residents living along the road and Maine Department of Transportation officials agreed to the plan rather than one that also installed rumble strips also along the edges of the road, said Kevin Cookson, council chairman.

People who live along the road were concerned that vehicles striking the rumble strips would cause too much noise.

The compromise was worked out during last week’s council meeting.

The rumble strip is to run down the center of U.S. 202 from the Augusta Country Club at the Manchester end of town to Bob Barrows Chevrolet near the west end. There will be no strip in some areas of East Winthrop, near the Winthrop Veterinary Hospital or at intersections and heavy business traffic areas, Cookson said.

State transportation officials will give specifics at a future council meeting.
