Sally Struthers lawyer enters not guilty plea to OUI charge

YORK -- Celebrity actress Sally Struthers, scheduled to appear in York District Court for the first time Thursday to face a drunken-driving charge, did not attend in person, leaving it to her lawyer to deliver her lines.

Attorney John Webb filed an appearance on Struthers' behalf by mail, waived a reading of the charge and entered a plea of not guilty for her.

Struthers, 65, of Los Angeles, is a frequent performer at the Ogunquit Playhouse. She was arrested Sept. 12 on U.S. Route 1 in Ogunquit and charged with operating under the influence of alcohol.

Struthers, best known for her role in the 1970s TV sitcom "All in the Family," was starring at the time of her arrest in Dolly Parton's "9 to 5: The Musical" at the Ogunquit Playhouse.

Struthers has no criminal history in Maine. A first-time offender convicted of drunken driving faces a 90-day license suspension and a $400 fine, but no jail time.

Struthers' attorney already has filed several motions in the case, including one seeking to have any statements she made to police thrown out and another seeking to have the results of a intoxication test rejected.

Webb did not return a call seeking comment Thursday.

Struthers is scheduled to appear next in District Court for a bench trial before a judge, rather than a jury, on Feb. 13.
