SKOWHEGAN -- Police are still sorting out a variety of charges brought against people having a drinking party Monday night in a vacant house.

Police found about 17 people -- several of whom were under-age -- hiding in the dark basement of the vacant house on Norridgewock Avenue, along with beer and plastic cups, Skowhegan Police Chief Mike Emmons said.

Work was to continue Tuesday night on figuring out who will be charged with what.

Sgt. Keith Bigger responded to the home around midnight after a former tenant called police.

"She wanted officers to be aware because she was told that there may be some kids going there to party," Emmons said.

While she no longer lived there, her name was on the lease, and she did not want anything damaged, Emmons said. The property is currently for sale.

The woman's son, who had lived there, "knew the place was vacant and thought he'd invite a whole bunch of his friends over to have a party," Emmons said.

Bigger found about 17 people in the basement, along with an assortment of alcohol.

"They were hiding in the dark," Emmons said. Several others scattered when police arrived.

Bigger and Officer David Tims issued several summonses and called the parents of those under the age of 18. "The parents came and picked them up one by one right there at the residence," Emmons said.

One person allegedly gave a false name and then left the residence.

Emmons said he wouldn't know until today how many people were under-age, or how many were summonsed or their charges.
