WATERVILLE — Police are asking the public for help in identifying a couple involved in a Nov. 6 purse snatching inside Walmart.
Deputy police Chief Charles Rumsey said Tuesday that a woman accidentally left her purse containing $850 in cash, gift cards, credit cards and other items on a shelf near the eggs just before 3:30 p.m. Nov. 6 and another woman took it, according to store surveillance video. Rumsey said the purse and its contents are valued at more than $1,000.

The woman who allegedly stole the purse is described as white and heavy-set with long brown hair, wearing a white or light-colored jacket and was pushing a cart with a pink baby seat in it, Rumsey said.
“She walks away from the area to another location and makes contact with a male who is white, with a thin build and short brown hair,” Rumsey said. “He had a female child with him, 3 to 5 years old.”
The woman who allegedly stole the purse then left the store, still pushing the shopping cart with the baby seat in it.
“She made no purchases,” Rumsey said. “The male suspect went to the checkout with the child still in his cart and purchased multiple food items using an EBT card. He leaves the store from the opposite exit where the female left.”
An EBT, or electronic benefit transfer card, enables people on Maine’s Food Supplement Program, formerly the food stamp program, to buy food and other items.
The woman who allegedly took the purse got into the passenger seat of a green, four-door car, possibly a Grand Am or Grand Prix, with silver rims, Rumsey said.
The man then got into the driver’s side and drove out of the store parking lot, he said.
He said police planned to put the surveillance photos of the couple on the Police Department’s Facebook page and www.waterville-me.gov.
Rumsey asked that anyone with information about the purse theft or the couple in the photos call police at 680-4700.
