The Somerset County Master Gardener program is set to begin in January.
The 2011 program will focus on ornamental horticulture, according to Hannah Todd, the extension's former home horticulture coordinator. Applications are due Jan. 10.
The program will be held on Monday evenings from 6- 9 p.m. at the Somerset Extension Office, 7 County Drive, in Skowhegan. An exact start-up date has not yet been set, Todd said. The project is a combined effort of the University of Maine and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Participants in the master gardener program will receive 40 hours of classroom training. After successful completion of the training program, each master gardener will volunteer 40 hours to a community gardening project.
Volunteer projects can include planting and maintaining a vegetable variety trial, designing and creating a mobile display to be used at fairs and other public functions or answering public calls and requests for gardening information.
For more information or to request an application, call the Somerset County Extension Office at 474-9622 or 1-800-287-1495.
People needing special accommodations can participate in the program by calling the Somerset County Extension Office at 1-800-287-1495 or 1-800-287-8957 to discuss their needs. Receiving requests for accommodation at least 10 days before the program provides a reasonable amount of time to meet the request; however, all requests will be accepted, according to Todd.
