I cannot, for the life of me, determine why Burt and Nancy Knapp (letter, “Locally grown produce is fresh, beautiful,” April 6) thought that this particular bunch of carrots in the advertisement for the “Source” insert might be deemed unattractive.

The carrots are obviously long and straight, having been grown in the right sort of soil. It’s difficult to realize that folks who farm might be offended by the good earth clinging to its fruit.

All too many people do not realize that onions, carrots, potatoes, beets, garlic and peanuts are dug up from the soil. If the grower is a good steward, he or she will let the soil dry and then shake it back down to from whence it came.

“Source” was a wonderful read for us today and will continue to be an inspiration as we strive to embrace the great farming heritage that is ours in Maine.
