In his column on Aug. 17, Greg Kesich says that this recession is too deep for workers to just wait it out, and that we need new governmental investments in “energy projects that will put people to work.”
Well, I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been a contractor for 12 years and have seen jobs drying up at an alarming rate.
The good news is that there is a job-creating, energy-saving program ready to go: Home Star. The program would offer direct rebates for energy-efficient retrofits to homes.
Home Star will help put construction workers — one of the hardest hit groups in Maine — and others who have lost their jobs back in action. By making homes more energy-efficient, homeowners can save up to 30 percent on their utility bills because they’ll be using less energy.
The best part: Home Star jobs can’t be shipped overseas.
So while members of Congress bicker about keeping their own jobs, let’s remind them about the dire situation many of us are in today. Join me in urging Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins to pass Home Star to help us all. Their state will be eternally grateful.
