The Maine gubernatorial election is barely over and the ugly head of hypocrisy has risen already.
It appears that many of those who voted for Paul LePage in order to “shrink big government” are now applying for those lucrative executive branch positions that comprise “big government.” As of November, nearly 1,000 “smaller government” folks are seeking those coveted jobs (Sentinel, Nov. 23).
How many more will have applied by January?
Apparently, they want the governor-elect to hire them before he slams the door shut on any more state hiring. Oh, yeah.
They like “small government” as long as it includes them.
Were the Democrats any better at this hypocrisy of hiring those who were instrumental in getting them elected? Probably not.
The one thing they (the Democrats) have going for them is that, at least, they weren’t crying for “smaller government.”
Oh, well, at least LePage can use his executive position at Marden’s to hire the thousands of Maine’s unemployed. Don’t expect that to lower your taxes, though; unless Marden’s has a change of heart and decides to pay its employees enough to not qualify for food stamps, subsidized housing, fuel assistance and other social safety mechanisms.
Do I wish LePage and his team to succeed in re-building Maine’s economy? Absolutely, I do.
I just don’t expect it.
