Fairfield police deserve recognition for toy drive

I was very happy to read the Dec. 20 story, "Fairfield police to deliver presents tonight."

This is a wonderful testament of the care and generosity of our community. Most acts of kindness go unseen or unspoken because recognition is not what it's about, but periodically it is important to recognize people who are making a difference.

In addition to the police department's very successful "Cops Care for Kids" program, town staff and volunteers manage a Christmas program that has adopted 37 Fairfield and Benton families with a total of 71 children this holiday season.

These children receive a new outfit, one new toy, hats, mittens and scarves that have been knitted by folks in the community and donated to the program.

This year the Fairfield Fire Department adopted three families with a total of seven children. Town office employees make donations and help put the packages together and wrap gifts.

The town of Benton contributes $500 to the program and local residents and businesses also donated $495 this year.

Donations to the program include new toys from the drivers and warehouse workers of PepsiCo, and the Fairfield American Legion Women's Auxiliary held a toy drive and donated many new toys.

Thanks to all donors, volunteers and staff for all their hard work. Residents interested in making a donation for next year may contact the Fairfield Town Office.
