In response to the KJ's Aug. 22 Our Opinion piece about revenue from Hollywood Slots, it is absolutely correct for the Legislature to review how income from slot machines is dispersed.
Reducing the portion dispensed to Maine's harness racing industry, however, may be ill-advised.
Now that purses for races have been increased, breeders are being asked to breed race horses once again. Owners and trainers are better able to survive this declining livelihood. And fans like myself can continue to support them.
The Legislature's decision will affect not only Maine race tracks, but also agricultural and county fairs, many of which rely on racing to keep their doors open.
It sounds as if the KJ is in agreement to expand casinos in Maine and increase education funding.
As an aside, there was one error in the editorial. "Enhanced purses for harness race bettors" should read "harness race owners."
