When it comes to gun control, it will be very easy to tell which of our representatives in Washington cares more about the safety of American people than he or she cares about re-election.

Anyone with more sense than a Popsicle stick ought to be able to understand that:

* Military-style weapons are made for killing people, not deer.

* Multi-bullet clips are for killing more people quickly, before rescue is possible.

* Bullet-proof vests are intended to protect those in the line of fire as they serve us, not a deranged person who wants to massacre as many children and other innocent souls as possible.

I know hunting is a tradition. I can’t like it, but I accept it. No sportsman, however, needs such weaponry to kill a bird or a deer.

I know people enjoy target shooting, but no one needs military weapons and multi-bullet magazines to shoot at a target.

Some people feel the need for a gun to protect themselves, but does it really take 100 rounds to stop an intruder?

The old mantra — guns don’t kill people, people kill people — is not true. Not true at all.

Countless studies have shown that a gun in the home means that it is far more likely that someone in that home will die of gunshot either by accident, by an intruder or by suicide.

And about the right to bear arms: The Second Amendment states “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.”

I say if people want to bear arms, they should join the militia — otherwise known as the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and National Guard.
