Museum a good home for impressive labor mural

Letter to the Editor

I stopped by the Maine State Museum recently to view the controversial labor mural displayed in the atrium. It was a kind of pilgrimage for me.

The mural is far more impressive seen in real life than it appears in news photos.

I found the panels both informative and moving -- an example of the power of art.

With the colorful figures in the foreground and the graphic vignettes in the background, each panel tells the story of some aspect of Maine labor history.

As a tribute to and celebration of Maine working people, the display is a fitting complement to the celebration of Maine industry presented in the permanent "Made in Maine" exhibit in the Maine State Museum.

I hope the mural finds a permanent home with the museum.
