Contrary to a couple of recent letters to the editor, the materials for the new Waterville police station are being purchased locally through Hammond Lumber.
Many of the subcontractors doing the work are also local, including E.L. Vining, Farmington, site work; Mainely Trusses, Fairfield, prefab trusses; Masonry Unlimited, Waterville, masonry; Ware Butler, Waterville, lumber; Standard Waterproofing, China, dampproofing; P.D.Q. Door, Waterville, overhead doors and aluminum framing and glass ; H.T. Winters Flooring, Winslow, flooring; and Granite Corp., Oakland, plumbing.
In the cases where a Waterville-area bidder was not chosen, the additional cost would have been around $100,000.
If the "most local" bidder was chosen in all cases, it would have added $160,000 to the cost of the project.
