Recent plea-bargain case seems too absurd

When I read about the recent plea-bargain on behalf of Nancy Hazard, "Multi-car crash driver takes plea bargain," (article, Feb. 9) serious questions sprang to mind:

What is the purpose of requiring a driver's license on Maine roads if it does not indicate some slight level of mental stability and moral responsibility?

Doesn't our court system undermine its own credibility with the public when it agrees to such a blatantly inappropriate plea bargain?

(How better to render the courts contemptible?)

Where is the Maine Bar Association in all of this? It might at least counsel its member attorneys with regard to some balance between client-interests and a decent respect for public safety. For example, why would they ever advocate returning a driver's license to a client who admittedly is subject to "psychotic episodes?"

We may live in a fallen world, but please let's not make it even more absurd.
