WINTHROP -- The Kennebec Land Trust has released its first book, "Between Person and Place: Conservation Histories from the Kennebec Land Trust."
Featuring essays and photographs that capture the stories behind KLT's conservation lands, the book is based on a series of interviews conducted by KLT intern Katie Epstein, from Davidson College, in the summer of 2009, according to a news release. Epstein asked 18 land donors questions such as:
"Why did Governor Kenneth Curtis donate his family farm in Leeds to a land trust?"
"How are the Vaughan Woods in Hallowell intertwined with American history?"
"Why is a forest in Wayne with 125-year-old oaks and pines called Gott Pasture?"
"Between Person and Place" is edited by Theresa Kerchner, Barbara Libby and Deborah Sewall. Two release events are planned for the 48-page book at KLT properties: today at 12:30 p.m. at the Small-Burnham Conservation Area in Litchfield, and Saturday, Oct. 2 at the Sturtevant Farm Scenic Area in Fayette. More information on these events can be found at www.tklt.org.
Copies of "Between Person and Place" will also be available at local bookstores and shops, and can be ordered online for $12 plus shipping and handling.
Working with conservation-minded landowners since 1988, the Kennebec Land Trust has protected over 3,700 acres in the Kennebec River and Lakes Region through donations, purchases and conservation easements.
The Trust maintains more than 20 miles of trails and its conservation properties are open to the public for hiking, hunting, fishing and enjoying nature.
