SKOWHEGAN – Brandon Berry, 25, a West Forks native, made his professional boxing debut on Saturday night at Skowhegan Area High School and defeated Bill Jones of Berwick, when the referee stopped the fight at the 2 minute, 9 second mark of the fourth and final round.

Jones, a longtime professional in mixed martial arts, also made his boxing debut Saturday.

After a quick Jones flurry, Berry attacked his opponent in the fourth round, finishing Jones with a series of lefts to the head.

“His hands were down. He was showing his vulnerability,” Berry, who recently completed a successful amateur boxing career, said. “I think the ref did the right thing.”

This fight was Berry’s from early in the first round. Berry was able to deflect Jones’ punches, while steadily connecting with left jabs and hooks. Berry ended the first round with a left-right combination, and continued to attack.

“That’s the difference between a boxer and a fighter,” Ken “Skeet” Wyman, Berry’s trainer, said. “I was nervous. (Jones) was no chump, but I knew Brandon would put things together.”

After Jones landed a right to Berry’s jaw in the second round, Berry countered with four consecutive lefts to Jones’ head. The third round was more of the same, with Berry avoiding solid blows from Jones and connecting with left-right combinations.

“Once I knew I could land that jab, everything else came together,” Berry said. “The third round is when I knew I had the fight.”
